Food must be available on a consistent basis through home production, purchasing, food aid, or resources.

To be food secure, one must have the opportunity to consume nutritious food that impacts your health and quality of life. On the other hand, food insecurity means there is a continuous lack of access to quality food that impacts your health and well-being. Many experts are concerned about global food security. There are several challenges that threaten the food security and stability of many people around the globe, such as:

No Access to Quality Foods

An inability to have access to adequate amounts of food is a growing problem around the planet. Globally, millions of people suffer from chronic undernourishment, and there are many households in the US that lack food, as well.

In some parts of the country, some Americans live in “food deserts.” Food deserts are areas that do not have a grocery store. Many people face a lack of nutritious food options that prevent them from experiencing quality food choices every day.

Non-Sustainable Farming Practices

Farming methods that utilize fertilizers, pesticides, and contaminate streams and waterways can create downstream dead zones. We must incorporate environmentally-sensitive production methods that do not threaten our environment and food supply.

Limited Laws and Protections for Farmers

Some countries lack legislation and rights to protect farmers and food growers. Furthermore, small farm operations cannot compete with big companies that dominate the agriculture business. Even in the United States, food workers are the lowest paid and least protected. They often experience low wages and substandard working conditions. Globally, more policies need to be implemented to ensure the rights of farmers and food workers.

The Effects of Climate Change

Studies reveal that climate change will inevitably reduce our food supply. The impact of climate change on food production may be more devastating to poorer regions of the world. Farmers in the future will have to find tools to adapt to the changing weather patterns and their impact on food production.

The demand for food will continue to grow. Farmers will need to produce more food as the world population continues to increase. The global population will increase to about 9.6 billion by 2050. These challenges will make it harder and more expensive for farmers to produce the food we need to feed the growing masses of people around the world.
